Whatever happened to companion soundtracks?
Much like the title suggests, today I thought I’d muse on a long forgotten and often nostalgic medium - Companion Soundtracks. If you were around in the late 90s/early 00s - you could find these everywhere. Movies or TV Shows would release these albums containing music made specifically for the show. There’s some overlap here with Soundtracks or playlists where the music was used in the program - so I won’t make a huge distinction there. A few of my favorites include the old Pokemon and Sailor Moon soundtracks, Sucker Punch (a mediocre movie with a banger soundtrack), and The Great Gatsby (the one with DiCaprio).
These were the kind of weird multimedia cash grabs that have somehow fallen by the wayside in favor of cheaper alternatives. Making music costs time, artistry, enthusiasm, and an human quality that no machine can truly replicate. While some albums (such as the aforementioned Pokemon and Sailor Moon ones) border on cringe in hindsight, I still feel that they are a truly under-appreciated medium in a world saturated with cheap robotic nonsense.
Where does this leave me in the world of Shattered Stars? Obviously, as a musician — it will be my honor to rise to this challenge. Even if it takes until the trilogy is complete, I vow that there will be some cringe-y Shattered Stars-themed music out there one day.
In the meantime, I leave you with my Official™ Playlists. Some of these tracks are for vibes, but there are some fun spoilers for those who look below the surface.
For now - I’ll leave this here as a short little blog. I’m hard at work prepping for the release of Book 1 - while also working on the sequels (which — not to toot my own horn, but I think they might be better than the first one???).
until next time,
